Jack Porter is a Gatekeeper, a cleaner who covers up the crimes of the rich and famous. In my webcomic, I don’t go into too much detail about his past so I’ll post some tidbits here.
Age 5 - Jack spends his first 10 years in an orphanage for sick children. He has a congenital heart disease which rendered him bedridden for most of his childhood and unable to play with the other children. The only way to pass the time was by reading newspapers and books on crime and human atrocities - subjects that fascinate him.
Age 10 - Jack becomes healthier and is able to move freely by himself now. Wishing to learn more about the outside world, he runs away from the orphanage. On his first day in the city alone, Jack is attacked by a degenerate who tries to molest him. Jack kills the man with a screwdriver and hides the body without remorse or fear. After this incident, Jack spends the next 2 years living on the streets, thieving, committing small assassination jobs for local gangs, and learning about the criminal underworld.
However, Jack eventually realizes that a petty criminal life was not viable - if he were to continue living this way, he would surely die on the streets as many teens often do. Jack cuts himself loose of his criminal ties at the age of 13 and returns to the orphanage, where he is adopted by the affluent Porter family.
Age 21 - For the next 10 years after being adopted by the Porters, Jack focuses on his studies, travels around the world, and lives a generally normal life. His fascination with crime and perverse human behavior inspired him to pursue a degree in psychology. He completed his undergraduate early at a top university and then pursued a graduate degree at Canter University under Dr. Kane.
At the age of 23, all aspects of Jack’s life are normal and successful - he’s almost finished his degree, he has a stable relationship, his heart disease is under control. All his peers would describe Jack as “the typical mild-mannered bookworm” and ”married at 25, 3 kids, 2 dogs, house in midtown, professor at some university, retire by 60.” However, Jack is unhappy and bored with his life. He starts to secretly venture back into the criminal world, but this time as a cover-up “consultant”. Through helping criminals and seeing death, Jack realizes normality is not for him, and that this abnormal career path is the only key to his personal happiness. With a new-found confidence and passion, Jack breaks up his relationship, changes his appearance, lives a low-profile life, and becomes a Gatekeeper.
Age 28 - Jack lives by himself and has been a Gatekeeper for 5 years now. To pass the time and act as a coverup, he writes meta-analysis and opinion pieces for criminal psychology journals where he injects insights he’s learned from his Gatekeeper job. Jack would describe this time as the happiest period in his life.
